And a varmint will never quit - ever. They’re like the Viet Cong - Varmint Cong!

One of my favorite characters.  One year in college, i dressed up as Carl Spackler - assistant greenskeeper - for our halloween party and never broke character throughout the night.    Carl represented the everyman - at least the everyman who has a lot on order..due to credit problems; who wants to kill gophers and doesn’t even need a reason and who comes out of nowhere, a former greenskeeper about to become the Masters champion!

As Carl once said, “…My enemy, my foe, is an animal. In order to conquer the animal, I have to learn to think like an animal. And, whenever possible, to look like one. I’ve gotta get inside this guy’s pelt and crawl around for a few days.”

A looper, you know, a caddy, a looper, a jock. So, I tell them I’m a pro jock, and who do you think they give me? The Dalai Lama, himself. Twelfth son of the Lama. The flowing robes, the grace, bald… striking. So, I’m on the first tee with him. I give him the driver. He hauls off and whacks one - big hitter, the Lama - long, into a ten-thousand foot crevasse, right at the base of this glacier. Do you know what the Lama says? Gunga galunga… gunga, gunga-lagunga. So we finish the eighteenth and he’s gonna stiff me. And I say, “Hey, Lama, hey, how about a little something, you know, for the effort, you know.” And he says, “Oh, uh, there won’t be any money, but when you die, on your deathbed, you will receive total consciousness.” So I got that goin’ for me, which is nice.” - Carl Spackler (Assistant Greenskeeper - Buschwood Country Club)

The Outlaw Josey Wales - “Mad-Dog Mean”

© 1976 - Warner Bros. All rights reserved

Starring in the 1976 release of The Outlaw Josey Wales, Clint Eastwood plays Josey Wales…a tough, fearless confederate guerilla fighter from Missouri whose family was murdered by renegade union army soldiers — led by a corrupt, blood thirsty officer known as Captain “Red Legs” Terrill.  After the war, with Terrill in hot pursuit, Josey heads to Mexico to join up with other displaced guerilla fighters.  On the way, he ends up reluctantly shepherding a rag tag group of settlers and outcasts through the wilds to a homestead in Texas.  Ultimately, he finds himself giving the group a 1860s version of the pre-game pep talk as they prepare to defend themselves against a hostile attack in which they are badly outnumbered and completely out matched.

Now remember, when things look bad and it looks like you’re not gonna make it, then you gotta get mean. I mean plumb, mad-dog mean. ‘Cause if you lose your head and you give up then you neither live nor win. That’s just the way it is.
